Tutor-student duo Jesse and Aiden have worked together since 2019. This fun-loving pair does a lot of reading and often work through Aiden’s math homework together.
Like many of our students, Aiden got involved after his older siblings were Learning Edge students. Jesse said he was inspired to volunteer after seeing an interview with James Baldwin, writer and civil rights activist. Jesse felt responsible to work toward a more just world by supporting black youth. What resulted was a four-year relationship with Aiden, wherein he’s gotten to watch him learn and grow from first grader to middle schooler.
Aiden is a pretty active kid and, at times, it’s been a challenge to keep his focus. Jesse won him over with patience and redirection. Now their work together is a well-oiled machine. Aiden said his reading and math have both improved since he began working with Jesse. He was also excited to share that he enjoys the games at Learning Edge and he’s a pretty fierce competitor.
Jesse even makes sure to keep tabs on Aiden when tutoring isn’t in session. He said, “I think Learning Edge is a great way to develop a personal relationship with someone.”
