Volunteer tutors are the lifeblood of Learning Edge Tutoring. New volunteers are always needed to work one-to-one with students. Tutors are matched with a student and work with that same student every week during the school year on reading, homework and other enrichment activities. Adults of any age are welcome, including academically confident high school students. Volunteers are supported by staff and resources such as a reading specialist, math coaches, and a library full of books and educational activities.
Tutoring runs for 30 weeks, and volunteers can tutor either on Tuesdays in the Austin community of Chicago or Mondays or Thursdays in Oak Park. Each weekly session runs from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m from the end of September until mid-May. Volunteers are also needed at our afterschool literacy program at St. Catherine-St. Lucy School on Mondays from 3:00p.m. to 4:00p.m.
Learning Edge provides an orientation for new volunteers and training for new and returning tutors in September before tutoring starts. New tutor orientations may also be held periodically through January to those who want to join after tutoring has started.
There are other volunteer opportunities, such as substitute tutoring for those who cannot commit to tutoring for the full year.
