Jamiya S. first came to Cluster Tutoring when she was in 2nd grade, at her mother’s behest. Now that she’s a senior at Lake View High School, she’s been accepted at 11 colleges.
Throughout that time, Jamiya has had one tutor — Lia Colbert, who has enjoyed tutoring Jamiya over the years.
“She likes to take on a big load,” Lia said. “Sometimes she gets frustrated at the same time, but she can do it. She can do the work.”
Jamiya wants to be a nurse, a profession that seems to run in the family, as an aunt, a sister, and a cousin are all nurses.
“I’ve always liked science,” Jamiya said. “Sometimes I struggled with it, but I always overcame it.” Her top three college choices are Southern University and A&M in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; the University of Nevada at Las Vegas; and Alabama A&M, all of which offer programs in science and nursing.
Jamiya has some scholarship money lined up and is applying for more. She said she is applying for seven scholarships overall.
Her high school work and activities keep her busy, too. She’s been active in Lake View’s Black Student Union and is vice president this year. She has taken on a leadership role as a school ambassador and receives help through a program called College Possible.
Jamiya doesn’t know exactly what kind of nursing she wants to pursue, but she’s thinking of becoming a nurse midwife or a nurse practitioner. She credits Cluster and Lia for all the help and encouragement.
“I always appreciated the extra help and the opportunities,” she said.
