Student spotlight: David

This is the seventh year that Tad Polley and David have worked together at Cluster.

High school senior David is taking a different academic path than many students. He attends classes two days a week at Chicago Virtual Charter School and pursues most of his assignments online the rest of the time.

That unique approach to school didn’t stop him from being accepted at multiple colleges. He’s been accepted at Southern Illinois University and Western Illinois University, and just sent in an essay to Northern Illinois University for that school’s consideration. Through it all, he was guided by his tutor, Tad Polley.

David and Tad started working together in 2012, when David was in 5th grade. The two have worked through every subject. David said he enjoyed tutoring — a lot.

“I loved it,” he said. “I learned how to be productive. There’s always something to do here.”

Like any other high school senior, before David makes a college decision, he’s working out his finances. He received a federal Pell Grant and a state grant, and he’s looking for more aid. He hopes to major in business.

With David’s school situation, he doesn’t participate in a school team. But he plays basketball at Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, which has a high school program for kids to play after school and on Saturdays. The program, called 931, offers coaching, academic advocacy, and mentors for each team member.

“It has been amazing to watch David grow and mature over the years,” Tad said. “I am very proud of him on his college admissions!”

Next year, David will be away at school, but both David and Tad said they intend to keep in touch.

“David’s a funny guy,” Tad said. “It’s been great working with him.”
