This year, Learning Edge tutoring is proud to highlight two high school seniors in our yearlong tutoring program. Khamyra and Dillon both met with their tutors on Thursday evenings at First United Church of Oak Park.
Khamyra
Khamyra has worked with her tutor, Liz Keys, over the last 7 years. They spend their time refining Khamyra’s reading and math skills. She finds math, cursive, and writing to be interesting subjects to learn about. Khamyra says that she has grown a lot as a writer and reader since coming regularly to tutoring.
“We used to practice writing paragraphs,” Khamyra recalls. “We always practice reading and that really helps. We’ve done a whole lot with math too.”
Outside of school and tutoring, Khamyra likes to hang out with friends, watch television, and listen to pop music, as well as attend concerts. Liz points out that one of the things that Khamyra likes to do that’s special, and not everyone does, is to go every year with her mother and sister to see the touring company of “Dancing with the Stars”.
Khamyra is still determining her next steps, but she would eventually like to study nursing.
Dillon
Dillon started coming to Learning Edge while he was in 6th grade. He has worked with his tutor Joe since 7th grade. Joe’s specialty is in fine arts. Over the years, they have worked on many projects together, with some occasional extra assistance for math. When Dillon was a freshman, they designed a thank you card for Learning Edge that was sent to its donors.
Dillon plays multiple instruments, with a focus on the guitar. He plays in his school’s rock band. Dillon also plays on a volleyball team, likes to draw, and play video games. Dillon shares that he and his friends are working on a mixtape with plans for music videos and a listening party.
Dillon is planning to major in Mechanical Engineering. “I like building stuff and trying to figure out how to build things,” Dillon says. His current favorite subjects include English, physics, environmental science, and AP government. He considers himself a history nerd, but music has always been a constant.
The Learning Edge community commends its high school seniors, Khamyra and Dillon, for their commitment to their education and personal growth. We are grateful to their tutors, Liz and Joe, for their years long commitment to them that has helped them grow both academically and as individuals.
