Advice for New Tutors

This submission is written by Danisha, who has advice for new tutors.

Dear New Tutors,

I know going in to tutoring and meeting your student is nerve wracking but don’t worry they’re nervous too. Things to help with the nervousness is to talk about things that you like to do or places you’ve traveled. Another tip is sometimes your student doesn’t always have homework so bringing extra practice or having a back up plan makes sure the evening is not wasted. Another suggestion is to find out your students goals and help them explore resources about their goal. Also visiting the library is a good way to spend part of your tutoring session. Another useful tip is to keep track of your students grades to help concentrate on the areas they need help on. You always have resources at tutoring so if you need help with a math question you could ask the math coach. A thing that your student would appreciate is keeping in contact with them over the summer. I’ve been in tutoring since I was in Kindergarten.  I have had five tutors since being at tutoring so you can trust my judgment.

But anyway, just have fun and enjoy the new tutor experience.

Your student,

Danisha
