High school senior Duane isn’t letting his multiple jobs keep him from finishing school or getting into college.
Duane and tutor Norma Jenkins have been working together since Duane was in 6th grade. He’s now a senior at Legal Prep Charter Academy, and for the last few years he’s been working at Chipotle and a few other places.
Soon Duane will take the next step. He’s weighing his choices about which school to attend out of the multiple college acceptances he’s received so far. His top choice is Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.
Duane wants to study engineering at a two-year college and earn an associate’s degree. “I’ll see what kind of jobs I can get with an associate’s,” he said. “I definitely want to work in something in the STEM field.” After he works for a while, he said he’ll consider getting a four-year degree.
“My favorite thing about tutoring is meeting my tutor each week,” Duane said. “I’m probably more focused on academics now, and I’m learning the importance of my education.”
His main goal is to make sure he gets his homework done, he added. “That’s been a big benefit about coming to tutoring.”
“I’ve pretty much been able to help him with everything,” Norma said. “We mainly concentrated on reading and writing. He’s worked hard since the beginning.”
