High school senior Kichelle is part of a tutoring tag team with her tutor, Holly Saunders. Holly tutors both Kichelle and her sister, Kiley, a high school junior.
It’s an unusual arrangement, but it works. And it has worked for the trio since Kichelle and Kiley started at Cluster back in the 2nd and 3rd grade.
Holly said both girls have always been good students. Kiley attends Northside College Prep and Kichelle goes to Lane Tech.
“Cluster has always meant having a place to study and do my homework,” Kichelle said. “It’s made me more responsible, and it’s shown me how to get things done.” Kichelle said she also has appreciated the library and computers at Cluster.
Holly agreed that Kichelle had grown in her abilities. Kichelle “has been a self-starter since junior high and high school,” she said. “She’s gained confidence.”
With two students to juggle, Holly has been able to divide her time, working with one while the other does her homework. They started working on reading, and have worked primarily on English and language. The resources at Cluster have helped, as has working with the Thursday night math coach, Rohit Naringrekar.
With Kichelle now in her senior year, she’s thinking about the future. She has been accepted by five colleges, including her first choice, Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. Kichelle wants to study communication sciences and disorders to work in speech pathology.
“I was interested in linguistics, but speech pathology seemed like it had more opportunities,” she said.
When Kichelle is off at college, there will be one extra benefit: Kiley will have tutor Holly all to herself.
