Vivian Grafreed has been part of the Learning Edge Tutoring community for 12 years: first as a mother, now as a grandmother and great aunt.
Vivian, a data coordinator for Pace bus company and the clerk at her church, is a consistent advocate for her family and their education. Vivian enrolled her daughters, Ameena and Ameera, in the program when they were 8 and 9. Now adults pursuing their own dreams, each of her daughters worked with our tutors through high school.
Vivian says she was attracted to Learning Edge because of its one-on-one offerings, which she said even her daughters’ school didn’t provide. She also appreciated the connections she saw being formed at Learning Edge. She explained, “I remember alumni would come back and they would always reference how they were still able to contact their tutors.”
These days, Vivian brings her granddaughter Ke’Mani to weekly tutoring. Ke’Mani has been working with her tutor Dan for a few years now, and Vivian says Ke’Mani is able to get the help she needs in various areas. Vivian also proudly expressed how she has referred a young lady in her church to the program as well as two great nieces, who are current participants.
The promise of student-tutor connection has proven true with her own family. Vivian explains she’s seen a lot of tutors and, “They’re all good. They always stay connected; They always call. Ke’Mani’s last tutor invited Ke’Mani to her prom send off. They are well connected to the kids.”
